The Office of Social Ministry provides educational and formational lectures, information and resources on Catholic Social Teaching and serves as the designated Archdiocese of Denver contact to local, national, and international Catholic organizations and institutions that personify Catholic Social Teaching in their organizational mission. The Office of Social Ministry works closely with the Colorado Catholic Conference (CCC). The CCC is the Colorado Catholic Church's public policy agency, jointly operated by the Archdiocese of Denver, the Diocese of Pueblo and the Diocese of Colorado Springs.

The Department of of Social Development and World Peace is the national public policy agency of the U.S. Catholic Bishops. The Department has two permanent offices:

  • Domestic Social Development
  • International Justice and Peace.

The Department's goals are to assist the bishops in:

  • Sharing Catholic Social Teaching with the community
  • Applying Catholic Social Teaching to contemporary issues, both domestic and international, which have significant moral and human dimensions
  • Advocating effectively for the poor and vulnerable, and for genuine justice and peace in the public arena.
  • Building the capacity of the Catholic Church on both a national and diocesan level to act effectively in defending human life, human dignity, human rights and the pursuit of peace and justice.

The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) is the domestic anti-poverty social justice program of the U.S. Catholic bishops. Its mission is to correct the core causes of poverty in the United States through the promotion and support of community-controlled, self-help organizations and through educational efforts.

Founded in 1969, CCHD's pastoral effort is the full empowerment of the poor and the vulnerable through active participation in the democratic process. The grants, economic development and educational efforts of CCHD are implemented in collaboration with the local diocese, and are supported by an annual collection. Catholic Relief Services (CRS) (back to top)

Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is the official international relief and development agency of the U.S. Catholic Church. CRS was founded in 1943 by the Catholic Bishops in response to the devastation of World War II. Its mission is to sustain human life and human dignity, alleviate global human suffering, promote the development of all people, and to foster charity and peace throughout the world. Working through regional offices, CRS operates in over 99 countries promoting peace and global solidarity.

Founded in 1910 as the National Conference of Catholic Charities, Catholic Charities is the domestic direct service and human development agency of the U.S. Catholic Church. They assist the poor and vulnerable within the United States. Within the Archdiocese of Denver, Catholic Charities of Denver helps people, strengthens families and helps build a sense of community and solidarity.

The Office of Social Ministry, under the direction of the Archbishops' Office, coordinates the annual Mission Cooperation Plan for the Archdiocese of Denver. Selected missionary dioceses and various religious and lay organizations are assigned to parishes within the Archdiocese of Denver where they may make appeals on behalf of their missionary efforts.

The staff of the Office of Social Ministry are also available to refer individual Catholic laypeople to international and local missionary organizations.

HIV/AIDS & HEPC Ministry of the Archdiocese of Denver: (back to top)

The Office of Social Ministry directs the HIV/AIDS-HepC Ministry for the Archdiocese of Denver and acts within an advisory capacity to the Archbishop concerning these issues. The ministry serves those persons who are HIV-positive and persons living with AIDS and HepC as well as their families, friends and loved ones. The ministry offers pastoral assistance, annual liturgies and retreats and a monthly support group. In addition, members of the ministry committee also serve on local and national committees to influence public policies and directives.

Outreach for Recover is a confidential program that assists members of the Catholic community with issues related to alcohol and other substance abuse. This confidential program makes accessible the resources to help Catholics find personal support and assistance in dealing with substance abuse problems. The program provides referrals to qualified professionals, groups, and other appropriate community services.

Ethnic Catholic Communities - Migration & Refugees: (back to top)

The Office of Social Ministry serves as the liaison between the Archdiocese of Denver and various ethnic communities within the archdiocese. These include:

The Korean Catholic Community
With well over 200 Korean families in the Denver area, the Korean community finds parish life and worship available at St. Lawrence Parish in Aurora. Pastoral care and religious education programs are provided in Korean.

The Hmong Community
The Hmong Community consists of refugees from the mountains of Laos and Vietnam. Many Hmong immigrated to the United States as refugees from the Vietnam conflict. Pastoral care, worship and religious education are available through All Saints Parish in Denver.

The Vietnamese Catholic Community
Over 1, 200 families participate in the life of the Queen of Vietnamese Martyrs' parish in Wheat Ridge. Mass and programs are available in Vietnamese. Community gatherings occur after the Sunday Mass; lunch is included.

Catholic Deaf Community: (back to top)

The Catholic Deaf Community is a ministry located at Holy Cross Parish in Thornton CO. Pastoral care and religious education programs are designed to meet the needs of the deaf community. Interpreters are provided for some of the Masses.
