Rules of Observance for Holy Days of Obligation These holy days of obligation are to be observed in Latin rite dioceses, with the following amendment: Whenever January 1, the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, or August 15, the Solemnity of the Assumption, or November 1, the Solemnity of All Saints, falls on a Saturday or on a Monday, the precept to attend Mass is abrogated (decreed by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, December 13, 1991). Regarding the 2008 liturgical schedule, the Solemnity of St. Joseph, husband of Mary, March 19, 2008, and the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord, March 25, 2008, are transferred in 2008 to March 15 and March 31 respectively. St. Patrick will not be commemorated liturgically in 2008. Funeral Masses are not to be celebrated on Solemnities that are Holy Days of Obligation (GIRM #380).
