Prefect, Congregation for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments, Vatican City

"We have Seen the Lord! Sacraments as Encounters with Christ"
If the proclamation of the Gospel is not preached, there can be no true conversion and faith necessary for the fruitful participation in the sacramental life of the Church. Why is this issue the foundation to the Church's successful implementation of the New Evangelization in the United States? Using §1072 of the Catechism, we will explore this issue.

10:45 a.m.
Workshops: Session One

1. Most Rev. José H. Gomez, S.T.D. Auxiliary Bishop of Denver

"Eucharistic Spirituality and the Laity" The Eucharist is the source and manifestation of unity within the Mystical Body of Christ. Our union with Christ in the Eucharist must be expressed in the truth of our lives today -- in our actions, behavior, lifestyle, and in our relationships with others. Bishop Gomez will reflect on how the renewal of the Church in our country begins with a stronger devotion to the Eucharist and how that devotion leads to proper choices in our lives.

2. J. Michael McMahon, D. Min. President of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians

"Words of Song, Words of Faith"
Because the rule of prayer (lex orandi) forms the rule of belief (lex credendi), recent documents on the Liturgy have turned our attention again to the texts of the liturgy, including the words that we sing. Come and explore the implications of Liturgiam authenticam and the revised General Instruction of the Roman Missal for evaluating and choosing texts for the sung prayer of the worshiping assembly.

3. Mr. Dennis McManus Associate Director, Bishops' Committee on the Liturgy, USCCB

"Preparing the Liturgy of the Word for the Sunday Eucharist"
Using the Introduction to the Lectionary, Mr. McManus will explore how the Liturgy of the Word can be understood through a study of the four major voices heard in the Sunday readings: those of the prophets, the psalmist, the Apostles and the evangelists. He will investigate how readers can learn to harmonize their own voices with those of the biblical text. A careful examination of the gestures and rites surrounding the Liturgy of the Word will also be made with specific attention paid to those required of lay readers on Sundays and Solemnities.

4. Dr. MeeAe Cecilia Nam, D.M.A. Lecturer in Music at Metropolitan State College of Denver

"Teaching Children to Sing: Some Guides for Children's Music"
This workshop will present ideas to music teachers, how to find liturgical music for children based on their vocal ability, how to develop their singing with proper vocal exercises, and how to plan and lead efficient rehearsals for children's groups.

5. Most Rev. David Ricken, J.C.L., D.D. Bishop of Cheyenne

"The Call and the Means to Holiness as they Relate to the Sacred Liturgy"
This talk will discuss the relationship between the devotional and prayer life of the Church to the source and summit of the Church's life, the Holy Eucharist. Bishop Ricken will examine this relationship in light of some of the teaching from the new document from the Congregation of Divine Worship entitled the "The Directory of Popular Piety and the Liturgy."

6. Most Rev. Michael Sheridan, S.T.D. Coadjutor Bishop of Colorado Springs

"The Sacrament of Penance and the Mercy of God"
This workshop will explore the three forms of the sacrament of Penance and how the appropriate celebration of each can best manifest the mercy of God.

7. Rev. Anthony Sorgie, Ed. D. Pastor, St. James' Parish, Carmel, NY

"The Treasury of Sacred Music: The Place of Gregorian Chant and Latin Hymnody in the Liturgy"
This workshop will focus on the use of Gregorian Chant and Latin Hymnody in the post-Vatican II liturgical practice in the United States. Is there a place for this part of our historical treasury? Where in the Liturgy is it most appropriate? How should it be sung? Who should sing? Can the congregation learn it in order to be fully conscious and externally active participants? These and other very practical performance items will be covered during the workshop.

8. Sr. Doris Turek, S.S.N.D., J.D. Staff Advisor, Bishops' Committee on the Liturgy, USCCB

"Communion in Diversity: A Challenge to Grow with Grace"
This workshop will explore the gift of allowing the wonderful universality of our Church to be a fertile ground for greater enrichment while maintaining the integrity of the Liturgy as communities become one through a mixture of cultures. Sr. Doris will draw from her expertise to help those whose role it is to create multi-cultural and bilingual Liturgies do so with a greater awareness of the principles and possibilities appropriate to these celebrations.

1. Rev. James Crisman, III and Sandy Reiley of St. Michael the Archangel Parish, Aurora, and Rev. Francis Pompei, O.F.M.

"Living Devotions / Living Liturgy" Through our prayerful involvement in our traditional Catholic devotions, we are called to full participation in the Liturgy. Clergy, lay ministers and parishioners must work together to continue to build the Kingdom of God here on earth.

3. Most Rev. José H. Gomez, S.T.D. Auxuiliary Bishop of Denver

"Las Quinceañeras: a Catechetical Moment"
The ceremony of Quinceañeras, though not a sacrament, is a sacramental. As with all sacramentals, it can be an occasion of catechesis for all involved. This workshop will present practical applications regarding this ceremony for parish life in the Archdiocese of Denver. (This workshop will be bilingual as needed by the participants.)

4. Tim Gray, M.A. Doctoral Candidate in Scripture at CUA; Director, Biblical School, Archdiocese of Denver; Professor of Sacred Scripture, St. John Vianney Theological Seminary

"Sacred Sign Language: How to Read the Sacraments in Light of Scripture"
The meaning of the sacraments flows from Scripture like water flows from a spring. Cut off the sacraments from Scripture, and the understanding and appreciation of the sacraments dry up. This talk will explore how Scripture is the key to unlocking the meaning of the sacramental signs and the exciting truth that the sacraments make salvation history present in our own lives.

5. Rev. Andreas Hoeck, S.S.D. Professor of Sacred Scripture, St. John Vianney Theological Seminary

"The Biblico-Liturgical Foundations of Gestures and Postures within Mass"
For full and active participation within sacramental celebrations, it is envisioned that all the faithful, young and old, have an understanding of liturgical gestures and postures. Using Sacred Scripture, this workshop will give teachers tools in communicating the significance of liturgical actions to their students.

6. Rev. Msgr. James Moroney Executive Director, Bishops' Committee on the Liturgy, USCCB

"The Liturgical Reform in the Year 2003: Questions and Answers"
Msgr. Moroney serves as the chief liturgical advisor of the Bishops' Committee on the Liturgy and as a consultant to the Congregation for Divine Worship. This workshop provides an opportunity to ask questions about the work of the Committee, the Congregation and such topics as the implementation of the new Roman Missal.

7. Marco Roman, M.A. Director, Evangelization and Catechesis for the Archdiocese of Denver

"Rethinking Sacramental Preparation: You Have the Rite to Know!"
You will leave this presentation knowing the simple principles set forth in the General Directory for Catechesis in order to translate the model of the Baptismal Catechumenate into all forms of parish and school evangelization and catechetical formation. Religious education will never be the same!

7:30 p.m.

Join us for a Lenten Marian evening of prayer and song beginning at 7:30 p.m. when Our Lady is welcomed into our midst.

The time will include a reflection on "The Year of the Rosary" by Rev. Christopher Hellstrom.
