St. Vincent de Paul Parish, a Catholic church near the University of Denver, will be hosting a recital of classical sacred music performed by one of their church's cantors, Kathleen Schmidt, and accompanied on piano and organ by music director Melissa Weidner.

The recital will be held at St. Vincent de Paul Church at 2375 E. Arizona Avenue in Denver at 7:00 pm on Friday, February 12th.  This recital is free and open to the public, but donations to the church's music ministry are welcome.

This recital marks the closing of an art exhibition with work by Kathleen Schmidt that has been on display at the church since mid-December.  Artwork may be purchased before or after the recital, and all proceeds from the recital and the sale of artwork will benefit the music ministry at St. Vincent de Paul Church.

In order to understand how theology is a science for St. Thomas Aquinas, it is necessary, first, to understand what he means by science. In contrast to the dominant view in the academy today, Aquinas did not hold that scientific knowledge is possible only through empirical means, that is, only through the action of one or more of the five physical senses. In this lecture, Dr. Sirilla explains that Aquinas understanding of science corrects and supplements the opinion that science is exclusively empirical. Aquinas epistemology enables us to identify sciences that are not limited to sense-data, such as metaphysics and theology.

Dr. Sirilla is an Assistant Professor of Theology at the Franciscan University of Steubenville. He received his Ph.D. in systematic theology from The Catholic University of America in May, 2008. His dissertation is entitled, St. Thomas Aquinass Theology of the Episcopacy in his Commentaries on the Pastoral Epistles. This work is currently under review for publication. In addition to the theology of the episcopacy, his research interests include the natural knowledge of Gods existence and attributes, the theology of grace and justification, and the distinction among different kinds of magisterial pronouncements and the corresponding types of assent required by each.

Vigil Praise is a monthly event hosted by the seminarians at St. John Vianney Seminary.  People of all ages from the Archdiocese of Denver come together to adore Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. 

The 2-hour event includes exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, the praying of the Sunday Office of Readings with a homily included, times of silence, and prayerful praise and worship music. 

Confessions are also offered throughout the event.  Afterwards, people have the option to remain for up to an hour in prayer before the Lord the the Eucharist or to join the seminarians in the refectory for refreshments and fellowship.  This event is free of cost and open to all.

THIS RETREAT BEGINS Sunday, Feb. 28 and ENDS Friday, March 5

Spiritual Exercises are an important tradition in the Church as a privileged way of having an intense time of silence, reflection and prayer. The Sodalit Spiritual Exercises consist in a group of meditations based on the spirituality of the Sodalitum Christianae Vitae and developed as a renewal in continuity in the Catholic spiritual tradition.

There are ten themes of meditations, about the fundamental questions of our human and Christian life (e.g. Who am I? What is the answer? Where do I come from?, etc.), organized in a schedule of a five day retreat. Each theme has a talk, spiritual texts to meditate, and biblical passages. There are also moments of prayer in Adoration, opportunity for spiritual direction, confession and the celebration of the Eucharist.

After dealing briefly in general with Newman's life-long engagement with education, I shall then consider what Newman meant by a liberal education and the liberal arts, by which he did not mean quite what those terms signify today. There has also been misunderstanding about the kind of university that Newman had in mind where students would receive this liberal education, particularly regarding the relationship between research and teaching.

Newman's idea was to combine the Oxbridge collegiate tutorial model of a university with the continental model of the professorial research-orientated continental university in the Catholic University of Ireland of which he was the founding president. His aim was to set up in Dublin a university that would be a kind of amalgam of Oxford and the recently founded Catholic University of Louvain, which was Newman's model for his university insofar as it was intended both to be a professorial and a Catholic university.

The lecture will conclude with Newman's defense of the idea of a university that would be both academically rigorous and authentically Catholic.

Ian Ker is Senior Research Fellow in Theology at St. Benet's Hall, Oxford and has taught both English literature and theology at universities in Britain and the United States. He is the author and editor of over twenty books on Newman, including the Oxford critical edition of The Idea of a University. His two most recent books were The Catholic Revival in English literature 1845-1961 (2003) and Mere Catholicism (2006). His biography of Newman, originally published in 1988, was reissued by Oxford University Press in 2009. He has recently completed the first full-length intellectual and literary biography of G. K. Chesterton.

THIS IS A WEEKEND EVENT, RUNNING FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY

This weekend retreat is sponsored by The Beginning Experience. The Beginning Experience Program is an ecumenical program designed to help the widowed, separated and divorced and other persons who have experienced a significant loss to make a new beginning in life. The Beginning Experience helps people to deal with the psychological grief process and also offers an opportunity for turning pain into an adventure of grace.

The loss of a spouse through divorce or separation is a devastating experience. Life patterns change permanently. The death of the marriage involves all the pain and grief that accompanies death. Adding to the burden are the feelings of failure, worthlessness and alienation. The pain of the separated and divorced is equaled only by the loss of one's spouse in death, especially if that death was premature or sudden.

The manner of loss is different between these groups but the pain of loss and sense of alienation in a couple-oriented society involve a similar adjustment process. The Beginning Experience Program is designed to be a time of closure on the past and a new beginning in the present.

Bernard J.F. Lonergan presented a contemporary argument for the existence of God in his important work insight: A Study of Human Understanding. The argument proceeds from his cognitional theory and epistemology and took the following general form:

If the real is completely intelligible, then God exists. But the real is completely intelligible. Therefore, God exists. Fr. Spitzer has reworked this argument so that it begins with ontological premises, but arrives at the same conclusion, namely, that a unique, unrestrictedly intelligible reality (i.e. an unrestricted act of understanding) exists, and that this reality is the ground of the intelligibility and reality of all else that is. This proof is systematically presented in Fr. Spitzers new book: New Proofs for the Existence of God: Contributions of Contemporary Physics and Philosophy which will be published by Eerdmans in early 2010.

Vigil Praise is a monthly event hosted by the seminarians at St. John Vianney Seminary.  People of all ages from the Archdiocese of Denver come together to adore Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. 

The 2-hour event includes exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, the praying of the Sunday Office of Readings with a homily included, times of silence, and prayerful praise and worship music. 

Confessions are also offered throughout the event.  Afterwards, people have the option to remain for up to an hour in prayer before the Lord the the Eucharist or to join the seminarians in the refectory for refreshments and fellowship.  This event is free of cost and open to all.

Auxiliary Bishop Conley invites you to join in the grand procession of the National Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Our Lady of Fatima. The celebration, in honor of Our Lady, will begin at 3 p.m. with Mass at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church in Denver [1060 St. Francis Way], to be celebrated by Bishop Conley and other priests from throughout the Archdiocese of Denver. 

Bishop Conley will crown the statue during the Mass, and upon the liturgy’s conclusion, will lead a procession from St. Elizabeth of Hungary to the Cathedral. Participants will say a rosary together, and sing Marian hymns during the one mile procession.

PILGRIMAGE RUNS June 2 - June 12, 2010:

Dr. Tim Gray and Ben Akers S.T.L. of the Catholic Biblical School will lead this pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Stops will include: the Church of the Visitation, St. Catherine’s Church in Bethlehem, the Western Wall and Temple Mount, the Jordan River, the Mount of Olives, the Garden of Gethsemane, St. Peter Gallicantu, the Upper Room, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, Capernaum, the Mount of the Beatitudes and the Church at Cana, to name just a few! This pilgrimage will make the Bible and the Liturgy come alive in your heart!

In October 2, 2009 the Archdiocese of Denver began recognizing a person each year for their service to the black Catholic community at the first annual St. Josephine Bakhita/St. Katharine Drexel Award Dinner. T

The Inaugural award recipient was Deacon Guffie Menogan for his steadfast faith, leadership and dedication to the Church. The award honors a Catholic who has shown extraordinary leadership in evangelization in the Black community.
