Tips for avoiding Advent anxiety
1. Decide what you’re going to say “no” to. To stay spiritually grounded during these weeks, plan ahead. Identify commitments you must fulfill and the ones you really want to commit to and make those truly meaningful.
2. Change your meditation material. Think about changing your meditation source(s). If you’ve been meditating on daily liturgy, switch to a devotional book—and vice versa.
3. Plug into your parish. Every parish has Advent and Christmas liturgies (daily Mass, penitential services), and they also have seasonal activities (like service projects). Visit www.archden.org/parishes
4. Do an Advent retreat. This could be a weekend retreat or a simple personal retreat that you do during a full- or half-day away from the hustle and bustle. Visit www.archden.org/events for local options. A worthy spiritual reading project would be to download Midnight Mass homilies of Pope Benedict and Pope John Paul II..
5. Choose entertainment strategically. We all benefit from the inspiration and relaxation entertainment affords us. Reflect on what entertainment you will enjoy during Advent and Christmas: you may want to schedule some sledding or simply watch your favorite Christmas movies.
