On March 16, 2009, the Holy Father announced that the Church will celebrate a special year for priests beginning on Friday, June 19, 2009 and ending Friday, June 11, 2010. The year also coincides with and commemorates the 150th anniversary of the death of St. Jean Vianney, Cure of Ars, "a true example of a pastor at the service of Christ's flock."
Gaining a Plenary Indulgence
In this Year for Priests, the Catholic Church has provided lay people with a special plenary indulgence on the First Thursdays of each month.
One can also obtain this indulgence on the final day of the Year for Priests, which is Friday, June 11, The Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
To obtain the indulgence, one must attend Mass in an oratory or Church, and offer prayers to "Jesus Christ, supreme and eternal Priest, for the priests of the Church, or perform any good work to sanctify and mould them to his heart." The conditions for the faithful for earning a plenary indulgence are the usual: prayers for the intentions of the Pope, to have gone to Confession within 20 days, to receive Holy Communion, and to be detached from all sin.

PRINTING INSTRUCTIONS: Reprints of this version will require a printer or copier with double-sided printing capabilities. Some machines may require users to manually create double-sided copies for each pair of pages. In such an event, print this document on single-sided paper to yield an 8-page packet. Otherwise, users may specify double-sided printing and print out a 4-page packet. Please refer to each sheet’s page number and position (referenced in the center of each page in grey) to guide manual layout of the document.
