Statement regarding the September 8, 2009 President's Address to Students.
Richard Thompson, Superintendent of Catholic Schools, has spent over 40 years working in public and private education in addition to 12 years experience as a restaurant owner and operator. Mr. Thompson, who was appointed Superintendent of Catholic Schools in March of 2004, has held the position of Principal at elementary and high school levels, was Assistant Professor and Chairman of the Business College at Black Hills State University, as well as performing duties as the Director of Diocesan Synod for the Diocese of Rapid City. Mr. Thompson served as the Superintendent of Catholic Schools in Rapid City for ten years before moving to Denver where he served two years as Associate Superintendent of Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of Denver.
Mr. Thompson interfaces on numerous levels within the archdiocesan offices, from foundation and finance processes to Catechetical Shool and Colorado Catholic Conference involvement. Mr. Thompson oversees 39 archdiocesan Catholic schools and 7 private Catholic schools that are part of the Archdiocese of Denver school system. He is involved in guiding many decisons, including Catholic identity, personnel, legal matters, communication with school pastors, parents and teachers, while assisting principals to achieve the mission of Catholic schools.
Mr. Thompson served as a member of the National Advisory Council of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, the Region VIII Advisory Council for the Small Business Administration, and has conducted presentation and writings in several areas relating to his experience in education and business. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees for Bishop Machebeuf and Holy Family Catholic high schools.
Mr. Thompson is happily married to his high school prom date for over 40 years. He and his wife have four children, one deceased. Mr. Thompson's interests include writing poetry, cowboy history and collectibles, and being "silly grandpa" to four grandchildren.
