More than 950 students to graduate from local Catholic high schools
Students collectively earn more than $48 million in scholarships

Graduating seniors will dress in cap and gown and make their final walk as high school students in the Denver Archdiocese this month. Among the six Catholic high schools in the archdiocese, more than 953 students will say farewell to classmates and teachers before moving on to the next chapter in their lives.

Bishop Machebeuf High School This Denver archdiocesan school graduated 72 seniors May 19. Each senior class student was accepted into colleges and universities across the United States and internationally with a total of $3 million in scholarship awards. The high school’s 2012 valedictorian Joshua Napierkowski plans to attend the University of Notre Dame in Indiana and salutatorian Joni Maxson will attend George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Napierkowski said he plans to talk to his classmates at graduation about the four cardinal virtues and how they relate to material and moral independence. “I’m sad to go and as much as I’m going to miss the people, I’m happy to be finished with this level of schooling,” he said. The graduates will move on to a myriad of colleges including City University of Hong Kong, Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio, Benedictine College in Kansas and the University of Colorado in Boulder. |

Holy Family High School This Broomfield archdiocesan school will graduate 141 seniors, who were collectively offered more than $15 million in scholarships. Commencement ceremonies will be held 10 a.m. May 24 in the school stadium. Valedictorian Genevieve Roth will attend Emory University in Georgia and salutatorian Braeden Fallen will attend the University of Notre Dame.

Arrupe Jesuit High School Every student in this northwest Denver school’s 2012 graduating class was accepted into a college. Together the graduates were awarded more than $3 million in scholarships. Nearly half of the 64 senior class students will be the first in their family to graduate from high school and more than 90 percent are the first to be college-bound. Commencement ceremonies will be held 10 a.m. June 1 at the school. This year’s valedictorian and salutatorian have yet to be determined.

The 2012 class had two valedictorians—James Bridges, who will attend the University of Denver, and Michael Herbert, who will attend Yale University. The salutatorian is Nicholas Horvath. He will attend Princeton University in Washington, D.C. They were among the school’s 197 graduates who together received more than $14 million in scholarship awards. |

Regis Jesuit High School The boys and girls divisions of this Aurora high school held their commencement ceremonies May 20 at Boettcher Concert Hall and May 21 at the Temple Hoyne Buell Theater, respectively. Valedictorian Jackson Coyle led his class in the ceremony when 217 seniors were handed their diplomas. Coyle will attend Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and salutatorian Thomas Plank will attend Stanford University in California. Graduating senior boys, who were awarded more than $14 million in scholarships, will move on to colleges locally and nationally including Gonzaga University, Regis University, Texas A&M University and the United States Air Force Academy. The girls division saw 192 graduates this year who amassed a total of $17 million in scholarship money. Jamie Monk, the girls’ valedictorian, will attend Santa Clara University in California, and Kerbi Brisch, the salutatorian, will attend Marquette University in Wisconsin. |

St. Mary’s Academy This girls Englewood high school has a 2012 graduating class of 70. The seniors earned more than $9 million in scholarships. On May 19, the graduates received their diplomas and will move on to colleges including Villanova University in Pennsylvania, Colorado College in Colorado Springs and Santa Clara University in California. The high school does not announce a valedictorian and salutatorian. Instead it recognizes its top award winners through the Sanders Citation and the Marian Award, given to seniors who’ve shown outstanding leadership, loyalty and academic achievement. Sarah Heybourne received the Marian Award and Madeleine McCabe was awarded the Sanders Citation. Heybourne will attend Dartmouth College in New Hampshire and McCabe will attend Bates College in Maine. |
