On May 20, supporters and friends of the Denver Archdiocese’s Hispanic Ministry gathered for the eighth annual Las Madrinas Awards at Centro San Juan Diego in Denver.
“Centro San Juan Diego is the result of the concern of Catholics … for the wellbeing of Hispanics in Colorado,” said Luis Soto, director for Hispanic Ministry and executive director of Centro San Juan Diego, in his opening remarks. “(It) has the dimension of faith formation we call pastoral services.
“Today we celebrate the other side of Centro: Bienestar Family Services,” he continued. “I describe it by saying that one side (Centro) works on encouraging people to believe in God, and Bienestar encourages people to know that God believes in them.”
The event, emceed by 7News anchor Ana Cabrera, included silent and live auctions, lunch, entertainment by El Mariachi Juvenil De Bryant Webster and the presentation of awards.
Honorees included: the Madrina (godmother) Award to Grace Velasquez, a parishioner of St. Mary of the Rockies in Bailey, for ongoing dedication and spiritual support to the community; the Corazón (heart) Award to longtime volunteer Gina del Castillo, a parishioner of Holy Rosary in Denver, for her many works of love to further the growth of Bienestar, including grant writing; the Rebozo (shawl) Award to Keith Montoya for financial donations through his printing business D1 Solutions; and the Estrella (star) Award to Spirit of Christ Parish in Arvada for consistent financial support through its social concerns ministry. Deacon Ross Casados accepted the parish award on behalf of the community.
