Denver’s Bishop Conley asks people of faith to join him
in “Friday Fast for Religious Freedom”
![]() |
In a column printed March 14 in the Denver Catholic Register, Bishop James Conley, apostolic administrator of the Archdiocese of Denver, urged all Catholics in northern Colorado to join him Friday, March 30 in a day-long fast for an end to religious persecution.
The Colorado effort is part of a national campaign coordinated by the U.S. bishops, urging Catholics and “all people of faith” across the nation to join them in prayer and fasting for religious freedom and conscience protection.
Among current threats to religious liberty, they said, is the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services mandate that forces employers, including religious ones, to provide coverage of contraception, sterilization and abortion-inducing drugs in their health plans.
"We should oppose threats to our religious liberty by every just means—by supporting legislation that protects our religious freedom and by making our voice heard," Bishop Conley wrote.
For Catholics, fasting is typically defined as eating no more than one full meal during the course of a day as a form of self-denial and sacrifice. They voluntarily give up what is good in itself, to affirm their ultimate reliance on God, and practice detachment from material things.
