Sister Mary Andrew Talle dies at 85

LEAVENWORTH, Kan.—The Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth mourn the loss of Sister Mary Andrew Talle, 85, who died Dec. 3 at Ross Hall at the order’s motherhouse in Leavenworth, Kan.
Mary Patricia Talle was born on Feb. 4, 1926, in Kansas City, Mo., one of five children of Andrew Louis and Mary Elizabeth Duffy Talle. She attended Blessed Sacrament Grade School and Redemptorist High School in Kansas City. After her freshman year at the University of St. Mary in Leavenworth, she entered the religious community of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth on Sept. 1, 1943, and, as Sister Mary Andrew, made her profession of vows on March 19, 1945.
Sister Mary Andrew taught elementary school for three years and then attended Creighton University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy. In 1953 she completed an internship as a pharmacist at St. Anthony Hospital, Oklahoma City, Okla., before becoming the pharmacist at Providence Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan. Sister Mary Andrew next earned a master’s degree in hospital administration from St. Louis University.
For 25 years she was the president, chair of the board of directors and chief executive officer of St. Joseph Hospital in Denver.
In 1991 she took the position of president and CEO of De Paul Hospital in Cheyenne, Wyo., and in 1992 she went to St. John Hospital in Leavenworth, where she was executive vice-president and chief operating officer. After resigning from hospital administration in 1995, Sister Mary Andrew spent many years in volunteer work at the University of St. Mary library. She retired to Ross Hall in 2007.
In the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth community, Sister Mary Andrew was preceded in death by her aunt, Sister Ann Margaret Talle, and her sister, Sister Mary Antonia Talle. Survivors include her sister, Sister Mary Josepha Talle, S.C.L., nieces, nephews, friends and her religious community.
A vigil was held the evening of Dec. 5 in Ross Chapel of the Sisters of Charity motherhouse in Leavenworth. A Mass was celebrated in Ross Chapel on Dec. 6. Interment followed in Mount Olivet Cemetery on the motherhouse grounds. Davis Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
