Longtime Mount Carmel pastor, Servite Father Joseph Carbone, dies at 84

Father Joseph Anthony Carbone, O.S.M., a priest of the Order of Friar Servants of Mary, died after a lengthy illness Dec. 7 at Mullen Home. He was 84 and a priest for 52 years.
Born in Denver on Oct. 24, l926, to Vincent and Louise (Liccardo) Carbone, he was baptized at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in north Denver.
He entered the Servites on Oct. 8, 1954, at Our Lady of Riverside Priory in Riverside, Calif., and made his first profession of vows on Oct. 11, 1955. He completed his philosophy studies at Regis College in Denver and theology studies at the Servite Seminary in Saluzzo, Italy, professing his solemn vows on Oct. 25, 1958. He was ordained a priest on March 30, 1959, at St. Marcellus Church, Rome, Italy.
Affectionately called “Father Joe,” he spent the majority of his life as a priest in the Denver Archdiocese, ministering as either associate pastor or pastor at his boyhood parish Our Lady of Mount Carmel for 24 years and at Assumption Parish in Welby for eight years.
His other assignments include Assumption Parish and St. Dominic Parish, both in Chicago; Our Lady of Belen Parish in Belen, N.M.; and the Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother (The Grotto) in Portland, Ore.
Father Carbone retired in 2000 and resided at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Priory in Denver until June 2010, when he became a resident of Mullen Home, operated by the Little Sisters of the Poor.
Father Carbone was preceded in death by his parents. He is the brother of the late Roxie (Anna); Helen; Dominic (Rose); George (Ethel); Viola and Daniel (Genevieve).
Visitation and rosary were held Dec. 11 and a funeral Mass was celebrated Dec. 12, all at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Interment was in the Servite section of Mount Olivet Cemetery in Wheat Ridge.
