A team of 10 students from St. John the Evangelist School in Loveland earned first place, out of 49 teams, at the FIRST Lego League (FLL) Poudre Robotics Qualifier Tournament on Nov. 13.
Hundreds of children, age 9 to 16, along with robots they built and programmed, competed in the tournament held at Poudre High School in Fort Collins. The team from St. John’s—under the leadership of volunteer coaches Barrett Crane and Mike Rottinghuas—spent eight weeks constructing a robot out of Lego bricks with a programmable robot brick, motors and sensors. In addition, the team submitted a research project, performed technical design reviews and improvised in a teamwork activity.
The competition was judged in four areas: project presentation, robot performance, technical design and programming, and teamwork. The win qualified the St. John students for the FLL state championship to be held Dec. 10 in Denver. State winners qualify for the world championship.
