Machebeuf student to play for UNC

Bishop Machebeuf High School’s star basketball player Rebecca Howell, a 6-foot-1-inch senior who made 3,000 points in three seasons, signed a letter of intent Nov. 9 to attend the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley.

She signed to play Division 1 basketball at UNC next year on a full-ride scholarship.

“It’s a big deal for our entire Machebeuf community,” said Ellie Kempfe, the girls’ basketball coach.

Howell is one of few from the school to sign a letter of intent to play in Division 1, the highest level of intercollegiate athletics.

Students get free dictionaries

More than 2,100 books were delivered to Denver area schools including 10 Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Denver as part of the Lodge’s Dictionary Project. The project’s goal is to aid third graders in inner-city schools with reading and writing skills.

Pastor serves as football chaplain

At some Eagle Black youth football games, Father Dan Zimmerschied can be seen sporting the team’s T-shirt and cheering them on from the sidelines.

As pastor of St. Vincent de Paul Church in Denver, Father Zimmerschied has reached out to the team to serve as a chaplain and share in their love for football.

“Father Dan’s support for these kids outside of school really shows his devotion to them as a person, not just as a student or parishioner,” said Chris Wiggs, the team’s coach and parent to player Riley Wiggs. “We are blessed to have Father Dan as our team chaplain.”

Many of the team’s players attend St. Vincent de Paul Church and school. The Eagle Black team is part of the Arapahoe Youth League, a competitive league in the Denver metro area.
