FOCUS adds 10 new campuses for 2011-12 school year DENVER (CNS)—The Fellowship of Catholic University Students, known as FOCUS, has added 10 more universities to its roster for the 2011-12 school year, bringing the number of campuses served to 58. Each year, teams of FOCUS missionaries are sent to college campuses at the invitation of the local bishop and with the support of the local Catholic campus ministry. Their goal is to communicate the Gospel to young adults in a dynamic and culturally relevant way. “By sending more than 260 full-time, trained missionaries to college campuses, we hope they will serve as living witnesses embody the truth, love and joy that comes from a relationship with Jesus Christ and then get creative and take risks to share his love with those around them,” said Curtis Martin, president of FOCUS. The new campuses are: University of Louisiana in Lafayette; Columbia University in New York; Arizona State University in Tempe; Winona State University in Minnesota; University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D.; Boston University; University of Texas in Austin; James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va.; Ave Maria University in Florida; and Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau.
Actor-alumnus Denzel Washington endows theater chair at Fordham NEW YORK (CNS)—Actor Denzel Washington has endowed a chair in theater and established a scholarship for an undergraduate student who is studying theater at his alma mater, Fordham University in New York. Actress Phylicia Rashad has joined the Fordham faculty as the first to hold the Denzel Washington chair in theater. Washington, who graduated from the Jesuit-run university in 1977, said he wanted others to experience the positive influence of mentors like the late Bob Stone, a former actor and Fordham professor who mentored him. He said Rashad, “as the inaugural holder of the chair, will provide the care, compassion and extra push to help take students where they’re meant to go.”
Regis University to launch new Jesuit higher education journal DENVER (CNS)—Regis University will launch a new online journal called Jesuit Higher Education, with the inaugural issue scheduled for distribution in April 2012. The biannual scholarly publication will include peer-reviewed articles, reports, interviews, reviews and other communications pertaining to teaching and learning in the Jesuit tradition. Marie Friedemann, associate dean of the university’s College for Professional Studies, will serve as editor of the new journal, which will be published via an open-access online system. “Making the most of opportunities in digital publishing and communication, the journal will create a new worldwide community of scholars within the Jesuit tradition of higher education that explores, critiques, develops and advances this unique approach to education,” Friedemann said. Regis is one of 28 Jesuit Catholic colleges and universities in the United States.

WASHINGTON (CNS)—Past studies have shown that those who attend religious services at least weekly tend to live longer and healthier lives. Now, new research indicates that frequent churchgoers also face those additional years with more optimism and greater social support than other people.
