October 5, 2011 — Two weeks into the NFL season, ESPN ran a Sunday morning special exploring why the third-string quarterback of the Denver Broncos, Tim Tebow, had become the most polarizing figure in American sports—more polarizing than trash-talking NBA behemoths; more polarizing than foul-mouthed Serena Williams; more polarizing than NFL all-stars who father numerous children by numerous women, all out of wedlock. Letters to Editor: Speak and live the truth I enjoyed the column in the (Sept. 21) Denver Catholic Register written by Bishop Conley, “Courage: Speaking the truth in love.” The bishop made it clear that humans need to be treated by their human identity. I admire and applaud Bishop Conley. As a Catholic I want the Church to be clear, yet compassionate. The phrase “speak the truth in love” appears in Ephesians and was quoted by the bishop in his article. We must speak the truth in love by speaking frankly: by defining love—by defining sacramental love; by defining the sacred love among friends and family; and most especially by defining the divinely-sanctioned carnal love between a husband and a wife within the bonds of holy matrimony. Since time-immemorial those things which hold true value or virtue are cheaply copied by the imposter, whether it is counterfeit coins or counterfeit marriage and counterfeit lifestyles. Making something look and appear similar doesn’t make it identical. Plastic “Monopoly”-money cannot replace a true silver dollar. Likewise, Courage must be backed up by real-life, living examples. And, those examples must be worthy of emulation by others. James A. Marples |
