Seven Dominican novices professed simple vows on the evening of Aug. 14 at St. Dominic Church in Denver.
The parish is the home of the novitiate of the Dominican province of St. Albert the Great, which is headquartered in Chicago. The novitiate has been located at St. Dominic since 1977 and Dominican friars have served the parish since its founding in 1889.
The men completed their novitiate year under the direction of Dominican Father Louis Morrone, who has just finished an eight-year assignment as novice master.
The novitiate is a canonical year during which novices continue discernment, study the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, learn the traditions, spirituality and history of the Dominican order, and work to deepen their relationship with God. The year focuses on the communal life and prayer of the Dominicans and the Church, as well as personal prayer, spirituality, and growth in preparation for future years of study and active ministry as cooperator brothers or ordained priests.
The brothers who professed simple vows come from a variety of backgrounds.
Brother Isaac Anderson is from South Bend, Ind., and graduated in 2008 from the University of Notre Dame with a bachelor’s degree in theoretical mathematics. He then taught high school math for two years before entering the order.
Brother Raphael Christianson grew up in Owatonna, Minn., and graduated from Carleton College in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in physics.
Brother Vincent Dávila was born in Spain but has lived in Fishers, Ind., for most of his life. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University, graduating in 2010.
Brother Samuel Hakeem was born and raised in Albuquerque, N.M., and graduated from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in space physics.
Brother Benedict Romero is from Neodesha, Kan., and graduated in 2004 from Mid-America Nazarene University with a bachelor’s degree in Scripture. Before entering the order, he worked with children and adults with special needs.
Brother James-Peter Trares comes from Shalersville, Ohio, and graduated from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Mich., with a bachelor’s degree in liturgical music in 2010.
Brother Joe Trout is from Fort Wayne, Ind., and graduated in 2009 from Purdue University with a degree in math education. Before entering the Dominicans he was a middle-school math teacher.
The newly professed brothers have been assigned to St. Dominic’s Priory in St. Louis where they will begin studies in philosophy and theology at the Aquinas Institute of Theology. They will spend the next four to six years in St. Louis, continuing their initial formation in preparation for full-time ministry.
