Statement on the death of the U.S. Papal Nuncio
Archbishop Pietro Sambi was a man of great apostolic energy. Anyone who met him was immediately aware of his intense love for the Church and his enthusiasm for the Gospel. That visible love and enthusiasm was a source of great support for the bishops of the United States. All of us are very grateful for the life and service of Archbishop Sambi, and we will miss his presence very much.
I ask the people of the Archdiocese of Denver to offer prayers for Archbishop Sambi, and I invite our priests to offer Masses for the repose of his soul.
May God give him the gift of eternal life, and give peace and consolation to his family in Italy.
Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap
Diocesan Administrator of Denver
Archbishop-designate of Philadelphia
