Father Fitzgibbons to be next Regis University president

Jesuit Father John P. Fitzgibbons has been named the 24th president of Regis University.
Father Fitzgibbons, who will take office June 1, 2012, will succeed current president Father Michael J. Sheeran, S.J., when he retires next year. The announcement was made last week by Dick Kelly, chairman of the university’s board of trustees.
Most recently the associate provost for faculty development at Marquette University, Father Fitzgibbons has experience in Catholic higher education as a priest, professor, administrator and trustee.
A native of Omaha, Father Fitzgibbons joined the Jesuits in 1973 and was ordained a priest in 1985.
He earned a doctorate degree in English from Loyola University Chicago, a master’s degree in theology from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, a Master of Divinity from the Weston School of Theology, a Master of Arts in English from the University of Chicago, and a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy and English from St. Louis University.
He has taught English at Sogang University in South Korea, and English and religion at Marquette University High School in Milwaukee, Wis. He spent two years as the assistant director of the Jesuit Collegiate Program at Loyola University Chicago and served as an assistant professor of English at Marquette University.
He has served as assistant professor of English and director of the Jesuit Humanities Program at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., as director of novices for the Wisconsin, Missouri and Upper Canada provinces of the Society of Jesus and as superior of the Jesuit Novitiate Community in St. Paul, Minn.
During his time at the University of San Francisco, Father Fitzgibbons duties included working as executive intern in the President’s Office; interim dean of the College of Professional Studies and vice president of administration. He was a member of the university’s board of trustees from 1999- 2007. He is a member of the Gonzaga University board of trustees as well as a member of the board of directors for Nativity Jesuit Middle School, in Milwaukee.
