A Discernment Retreat for those interested in diaconal ministry will be held 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 21 at the John Paul II Center. Deacon Mark Salvato will lead the retreat.
“We hold these retreats simply so that men of the archdiocese who think they might have a vocation to the diaconate can discern that in a prayerful and informative way,” Deacon Salvato said.
The day will begin with morning prayer with the current formation classes. That will be followed by Mass, then a question and answer session accompanied by a presentation about the formation process.
Following lunch, the group will see a presentation on the theological component of the diaconate, then close with exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and evening prayer.
These retreats attract men from all walks of life. Their wives are encouraged to come as well, Deacon Salvato said.
“There’s no way that candidates could begin this ministry without the help and approval of their spouses,” he said. “Wives are required to give their permission for each advancement in the formation process and are even asked by the archbishop if he has permission to ordain their husbands. These men come to serve the Lord and to do that they need the support of those at home.”
The retreat is sponsored by St. Francis School of Theology for Deacons. The John Paul II Center is located at1300 Steele St. in Denver. RSVP by Aug. 15 by emailing pookmfs@msn.com.
