Regis boys win first state lacrosse title
In April, the Regis Jesuit High School Boys Division lacrosse team suffered their only loss of the season to longtime rival Kent Denver. On Saturday, the Raiders avenged that loss and in the process claimed the 5A state championship by defeating the Sun Devils 11-10 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City.
At the end of the second quarter, the game was tied 4-4 but Regis scored one more goal in the third period than did their opponents. In the final minutes of the game, Kent Denver fought back but in the end couldn’t overcome the one-point deficit.
The victory marks the Raiders’ first boys lacrosse championship. The Raiders are coached by Jim Soran. With five goals, high scorer for Regis was Ryan Ball.
Mullen girls track team gets 11th state title
It came down to the final race between two other teams, but when it was over the girls track team of J.K. Mullen High School claimed victory at the 4A track and field state championship games at Jeffco Stadium in Lakewood May 21.
The Mustangs watched as second place Wheat Ridge was edged out of a victory in the 1,600-meter relay by Glenwood Springs High School. That left the Farmers with a total of 57 points, one shy of Mullen’s 58, which gave the Mustangs their 11th girls track team title. Christine Scott contributed to her team’s victory with individual wins in the 200-, 400- and 800-meter dashes and Taylor Klein contributed with runner-up finishes in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles.
Mullen boys take 4A swim title
The J.K. Mullen High School boys swim team was in Grand Junction Saturday working hard to win their first team title in six years. P.J. Wickwire, who earlier this year suffered a torn rotator cuff, won the individual 50-meter and 500- meter freestyle events as well as the 400-meter freestyle team event to finish ahead of rivals Cheyenne Mountain and Silver Creek High Schools. The title was the first for the Mustangs since wining three consecutive championships from 2003-2005. Mullen swim coach Kevin Sullivan was also recognized as coach of the year by the Colorado High School Swim Coaches Association.
