Religious sister to be honored
May is National Foster Care Awareness Month.
For outstanding work as a foster parent and advocate for children’s welfare, Sister Michael Delores Allegri, S.C.L., will be recognized by Colorado’s Department of Human Services during National Foster Care Awareness Month.
Sister Allegri, a Sister of Charity of Leavenworth, Kan., was selected as one of six finalists to be honored by Gov. John Hickenlooper and Executive Director Reggie Bicha at a luncheon to be held May 9 at the governor’s mansion.
In 12 years of service with Denver’s Catholic Charities, she has cared for more than 40 children and helped countless families heal and reunite. She accepts a wide range of foster children, including those with severe trauma histories.
In a nomination letter, Cheryl Garcia, director of foster care at Catholic Charities, wrote: “Sister Michael strongly believes that every child deserves the best and therefore goes above and beyond the role of a foster parent. Sister Michael is a role model and an inspiration to the child welfare system.”
Sister Allegri is president of the Colorado State Foster Parent Association, was invited to serve on the Governor’s Task Force, and is a member of several teams for the Denver County Department of Human Services.
The luncheon will highlight foster parents and draw attention to the work they perform on a daily basis.
