Religious sisters luncheon a winning event
Among all the gifts that were drawn at the Serra Club of Denver’s long-running annual Religious Sisters Appreciation Day held Saturday, April 9, at Church of the Risen Christ in Denver, the most applause was for a hand-made quilt sewn by the wife of a Serra member. Seminary professor-author Sister Prudence Allen, a Religious Sister of Mercy of Alma, Mich., surrounded by admirers of the quilt, had chosen the gift-wrapped package from the many door prizes offered.
At the end of the day, every religious sister walked away with a gift bag, a door prize and a cash award. Other prizes consisted of food baskets, Central City Opera tickets, Gerken’s Church Goods and St. Thomas More Gift Shop items.
The day began with a midmorning Mass for the 90 sisters, celebrated by Jesuit Father Leo Weber, followed by a luncheon and social hour. Chairman Jim Hilger expressed his thanks to the many outside donors and Denver Serra members who made the day a success. He said that in recent years , the largest gifts have been received from a generous Protestant donor.
“The day offers our religious sisters a pleasant half day to catch up with each other, as many sisters now are encouraged to live away from their orders and interface with the public, near their mission,” Hilger said. “We Serrans are always overwhelmed by the joy expressed by the sisters renewing their friendships. It is an honor for us to host this happy occasion.”
