Longtime educator Sister Aline Dalton dies

Sister M. Aline Dalton, S.L., who served for many years as an educator, primarily in Colorado and New Mexico, and also as an administrative assistant, bookkeeper and treasurer, died Jan. 11 at the Loretto Motherhouse in Nerinx, Ky. She was 91 and in her 72nd year as a Sister of Loretto at the Foot of the Cross.
Sister Dalton was born April 26, 1918, in Kansas City, Mo., to Nellie (McAuliffe) and Michael Dalton and was baptized Mary Catherine. She entered the Sisters of Loretto on June 8, 1939, and was received into the community Dec. 8 of that same year. She made her first vows Dec. 8, 1941, and her final vows Aug. 15, 1945. She received a bachelor’s degree from Loretto Heights College in Denver in 1951 and a master’s in education from St. Louis University in St. Louis in 1959.
Sister Dalton began her teaching career in Louisville, Ky., in 1941. She also taught in St. Louis, New Mexico and in Colorado Springs. From 1965 to June 1970 she was assigned to Holy Family High School in Denver as principal and superior of the Loretto community, which included the religious sisters who taught at Holy Family Grade School. In 1979, she served as a typist at the North American College in Rome and became an administrative assistant there in 1981 until returning to the states. In the mid-80s she served as office assistant for the Sisters of Loretto Denver office for one year. In the late 1980s, she served as a bookkeeper and then did fundraising for the alumni office at Holy Family High School.
Though Sister Dalton retired in the mid-1990s, she handled the health insurance for the local Loretto Center community from about 2000 until 2004, when she moved to the Loretto Motherhouse infirmary in Nerinx, Ky. She resided there until her death. Burial was at the motherhouse cemetery Feb. 15.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated 7 p.m. March 2 in the chapel at the Loretto Center, 4000 S. Wadsworth Blvd. in Littleton, Colo.
