Jan. 22 Reparation mass to mark Roe v. Wade anniversary
The 2011 Bishops’ Mass of Reparation for Sins Committed Against Life will be celebrated at the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception at 10 a.m. Jan. 22.
The date is the 38th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in the case of Roe v. Wade, which stated that a woman’s constitutional right to privacy extends to a woman’s decision to have an abortion. The Mass is offered for the restoration of the right to life for all humans from the moment of conception to natural death and prays for an end to abortion. It will be celebrated by Auxiliary Bishop James D. Conley.
According to a 2009 Gallup poll, more Americans identify themselves as pro-life than those who identify themselves as pro-choice by a margin of 51 percent to 42 percent. Still, with an estimated half of all pregnancies considered “unintended,” 40 percent end in abortion according to the Guttmacher Institute.
Following the Mass, Bishop Conley will lead a procession across the street to the steps of the state Capitol and lead pro-lifers in solemn recitation of the rosary.
The Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception is located at 1530 Logan St. in Denver. For more information, contact the Office of Liturgy at 303-715-3221.
