Marycrest Franciscan Sister Elenius Pettinger dies at 91
Sister Elenius Pettinger, O.S.F., former director of retreat ministry at Queen of Peace Oratory at Marycrest in Denver, died Dec. 10 at the sisters’ Marian Residence community in Alliance, Neb. She was 91.
The daughter of Raymond and Sylvia Pettinger, Sylvia Louise (Sister Elenius) was born in Stuart Neb., on June 17, 1919. She entered the community of the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity in Stella Niagara, N.Y., at the age of 18.
She made her profession of vows two years later at Marycrest convent in Denver, the locale of the newly established Sacred Heart province of the congregation. She was educated at St. Francis Mission in St. Francis, S.D.; St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa; Minot State Teachers College in Minot, N.D., and received her bachelor of arts degree from Regis College in 1962.
Her ministries included teaching at Holy Rosary Mission in Pine Ridge, S.D., and in Scottsbluff and Alliance, Neb.; and, at different times, as record librarian, business manager and associate administrator in three of the congregation’s Nebraska hospitals.
It was from 1987 until her retirement to Alliance in 2006 that she was dedicated to retreat ministry and as spiritual director.
She is survived by a brother, Len (Joanne) Pettinger of Brighton, Colo.; a sister Mary (Henry) Enomoto of Torrance, Calif.; and a cousin, Judy Shephard of Denver.
