Father Andreas Hoeck, academic dean of St. John Vianney Theological Seminary, announced Oct. 20 that the seminary’s affiliation to the Faculty of Theology of the Pontifical Lateran University was renewed for another five years by the Congregation for Catholic Education.
The congregation is the dicastery (or department) of the Roman Curia (Holy See) that oversees Catholic seminaries, universities and schools. It serves in a manner equivalent to an accrediting agency by authorizing certain degrees to be granted in the name of the pontiff.
St. John Vianney Seminary is authorized to grant the Bachelor of Sacred Theology (S.T.B.) and also the Bachelor of Philosophy (B.Phil.) to seminarians who meet the requirements, which include, in addition to the regular seminary theology and philosophy programs, extra language requirements, a thesis and a comprehensive examination at the end of studies.
The Lateran University serves to oversee the academic program of the seminary and passes its recommendation for affiliation to the congregation, which gives the final approval. The St. John Vianney philosophy program affiliation was renewed last spring.
To receive this authorization, the seminary must submit annual reports on the state of the seminary, the number of students, the classes offered, and information on faculty members and other academic issues. In addition, a representative of the Lateran observes the comprehensive examinations and visits the seminary periodically.
