Denver Catholic Register wins Catholic Press Awards
By Denver Catholic Register
The Denver Catholic Register won two awards in the Catholic Press Association’s 2010 journalism contest. The awards were announced June 4 at the Catholic Media Convention in New Orleans.
The Register won a second place award for Best Coverage of the Year for Priests for: “Fraternal charity: priest donates kidney,” story by Julie Filby, photo by James Baca; “A priest’s chalice,” story by Roxanne King, photos by James Baca; and Year for Priests page, which included Year for Priests Prayer Calendar designed by Chad Andrzejewski and Filippo Piccone. Judges said, “The package provided an original take on the Year for Priests. The story about the kidney donation illuminated the theme of self-sacrifice in an unexpected way. The piece about the chalice was a refreshing look at the priests’ vocation using details from their lives to illuminate the meaning of this important ritual object.”
The Register also won a second place award for Best General News Photo for “Columbine commemoration” by James Baca. Judges said the photo “succeeds in using wonderful light and a powerful moment to tell the story. It is a quiet moment that combined with the closed eyes on the woman and hand of the man, bring sadness to remember that day. Well done.”
The Denver Archdiocese’s Spanish-language newspaper, El Pueblo Católico, secured three Spanish awards: a first place for Best In-Depth Analysis (“Los Estudios Superiores Enriquecen El Esperitu Humano” by Lara Montoya), a second place for Best Coverage of the Year for Priests (“Porque Rezar Por Los Sacerdotes?”; “Que Hace Distinto Al Sacerdote?”; “Los Caminos De Dios Son Misteriosos” by Father Jorge Rodriquez; Father Daniel Cardo; Lara Montoya) and a third place for Best Editorial (“Una Cuaresma De Ayuno” by Rossana Goñi).
