By Denver Catholic Register
Broomfield’s Holy Family High School won its first ever state baseball championship on May 29.
The Tigers faced two-time defending champ Eaton High School in the 3A title game at Butch Butler Field in Greeley. Holy Family was successful in braking Eaton’s 60-game winning streak on their way to an 11-1 victory. Tiger pitcher Cody Simmering was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player for giving up only four hits in the game.
In boys lacrosse, Regis Jesuit, which got to the state championship round by defeating the number one seeded Arapahoe, finished in second place in the state tournament May 22, losing to Cherry Creek, 11-4.
In other prep sports, many fine performances were turned in by athletes of the local Catholic high schools at the May 20-22 state track meet sponsored by the Colorado High School Activities Association at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood.
Among them, Bishop Machebeuf High School senior Devon White, who came away with first place finishes in the 100-, 200- (in which he set a meet record) and 400-meter runs, a remarkable accomplishment for this athlete who only decided to take up running in his senior year.
In other events in the 3A competition, Holy Family sophomore Alexis Gerry placed first in the girls discus throw, with a toss of 116 feet, 11 inches. Meantime her classmate, senior Colton Emich, took first place in the boys discus with a 154-foot hurl.
The Mullen Mustangs made a good accounting in 4A action as junior Malik McKinney placed first in the 100-meter dash and second in the 200-meter dash. Senior Hondo Katz placed fourth in the 800-meter run and the boy’s team finished second in the 4x100 meter relay. In girls competition, senior Vanessa Fabrizio took first place in the 800-meter run while sophomore Kristine Scott placed third in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes.
In 5A boys hurdles, junior Casey Young of Regis Jesuit High School placed first place in the 110-meter hurdles and later took first in the 300-meter hurdles while fellow senior Conner Winter came in first in the boys 3,200-meter run. In girls competition Regis Jesuit freshman Ana Holland placed third in the girls 100- and 200-meter dashes.
Looking at the final team stats, in 5A competition, Regis Jesuit boys placed third overall while the women placed 15th. In 4A category, both the men and women squads for Mullen High School placed third place in team competition and in the 3A boys bracket, Holy Family placed fifth, while Bishop Machebeuf placed ninth.
