Four Golf tournament aims to show appreciation to priests, seminarians
By John Gleason
The inaugural Priest and Seminarian Golf Tournament and Appreciation Day is set for Aug.9 at Broadmoor Country Club in Colorado Springs.
One of the purposes of the event is to help build camaraderie between the laity and the priests of the three dioceses of Colorado, according to tournament organizer John Koenig, station manager for Catholic Radio station KPIO in Loveland.
“We would like as many priests and seminarians to come as possible,” Koenig said.
In an effort to show appreciation, Koenig said organizers are hoping to provide a new suit for any priest or seminarian who is able to participate.
“The best way to do that is to get as many people to join the tournament as possible,” he said. “We have 144 openings and we’re hoping to get people involved in different ways. Some might organize their own foursome and invite their pastor to play as their guest; others might simply want to sponsor a priest.
“We’re also thinking that some priests might want to set up on the tee of the hole and take the drive for each of the players,” he added. “We have a lot of ideas we’re kicking around.”
The day begins with sign up at St. Paul’s Church, located across the street from the Broadmoor, followed by a brunch, transportation to the course, afternoon social hour and dinner to follow the game. Golf pros at the course will be conducting driving and putting clinics. For those who want to get involved but who don’t play golf, a Texas Hold ‘Em poker tournament will be held at the parish hall. The event aim is simply to show priests and seminarians the gratitude they deserve.
“We want this to become a premiere event for all Catholics in Colorado,” Koenig said, “and to thank our priests for doing such a good job.”
Cost to play in the Priest and Seminarian Golf Tournament and Appreciation Day is $250. Cost for those who wish to participate in the card tournament only is $75. Registration information is available by calling 970-669-8000.
