Scholarship awarded
By John Gleason
At the Hope Springs Eternal luncheon April 16, Seeds of Hope Charitable Trust awarded its first Journey of Hope Scholarship.
The $4,000 scholarship ($1,000 per year for four years) was presented to 14-year-old Cedric Gonzales-Mata, an eighth-grader who attends St. Rose of Lima School in Denver. Seeds of Hope Executive Director Betsy Boudreau said competition for the award was spirited.
“It was quite a job for them,” she said. “All the students had to make a formal application, which included an essay about Catholic education that was then reviewed by a panel.”
Father Steven Voss, parochial vicar at Spirit of Christ Parish, was a member of the selection panel and presenter of the award. He praised the young man for his essay.
“He knows the value of an education and is aware of the cost and the sacrifice to his family,” Father Voss said.
