Regis faculty, staff spend day serving
On April 6, nearly 200 faculty and staff members from Regis Jesuit High School participated in a “Day in Service” by volunteering at various service organizations in the Denver metro area.
“Being committed to justice is one of the five tenets of Jesuit education,” said Father Philip G. Steele, S.J., Regis Jesuit president. “We require our students to spend time every year performing community service, so it was a natural progression to provide an opportunity for that for our faculty as well.”
Each school year, juniors and seniors spend two weeks in direct service to the poor and marginalized.
“I’ve wanted to do something like this since I started here 15 years ago,” said teacher Jim Broderick King who organized the event. “Logistically, it was difficult to pull off, but with the leadership of the student service directors and the support of the administration, we were able to make it happen. I think it was a great first effort.”
Faculty and staff volunteered at Food Bank of the Rockies, the veteran’s hospital, Saddle Up, and Place Bridge Academy’s Newcomer program for immigrant and refugee children.
