Machebeuf students support Hiatian children
The Student Life Leadership Organization at Bishop Machebeuf High School raised $10,200 for Haitian children. This amount will provide food, housing, clothing, education and medical care for one year for 34 children at an orphanage run by the “Movin’ with the Spirit” organization.
Awareness and funds were raised through a 30-Hour Fast, school dance, Mission: Haiti T-shirt sales, donations from the Machebeuf community, as well as donations from St. Pius X, St. James and Mother of God parishes and St. John Vianney Theological Seminary.
Additional motivation was provided by Principal Jessie Skipwith who agreed to be “ice creamed” at a pep rally if the fundraising goal was met.
“Initially I didn’t think the students would bring that level of enthusiasm, commitment and dedication to this effort—for members of our human family in Haiti,” said Skipwith. “So I agreed to the ‘Principal Sundae!’”
“Our students never cease to amaze me with their ability to tie together their enthusiasm, creative genius and love for their fellow man,” he said.
Support also came from teacher Tim Blesse who donned a gorilla suit for a day, and teachers Peter Burds, Dennis Brehm and Tim Sullivan, who shaved their heads at the pep rally, along with several seniors.
