Ways the Register deepens your faith
By Roxanne King
You probably noticed our green Denver Catholic Register flag this week, instead of the usual red, paying homage to the color of our first cover, which debuted as the Denver Catholic on March 17, 1900. We’re showing our Irish on this St. Patrick’s Day, our 110th birthday!
In preparation for this day, over the last four weeks we’ve introduced you to our staffers, shared a bit of our history and invited you to join our mission of informing, evangelizing and catechizing the faithful by voluntarily donating the $25 cost of an annual subscription, which registered contributing parishioners get for free. Many of you have generously responded for the second year in a row, and we are deeply grateful. If you’ve been meaning to send a check but haven’t, it’s not too late to participate in the 2010 JOIN the MISSION voluntary subscription campaign (see ad below).
On this milestone anniversary, we thought we’d share 11 ways the Denver Catholic Register aims to deepen your faith.
• The Archbishop’s Column by Archbishop Charles Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., provides strong, clear teaching on vital issues of today.
• The Saint profiles offer inspiration and role models to Catholics of all ages.
• The CateQuiz’em tests your faith knowledge and makes you laugh.
• The Year for Priests prayer calendar reminds you to pray for the holiness of a different priest each day.
• The Year for Priests chalice stories give you a glimpse into the life of a priest as he shares in his own words the story of the sacred vessel he uses to consecrate the wine at Mass.
• George Weigel’s The Catholic Difference columns are informative, insightful and infused with deep love and respect for the Catholic experience.
• Christopher Stefanick’s The Good News on Youth columns present refreshing, uplifting news about Catholic youth.
• James Cavanagh’s Breaking Open the Word Scripture reflections impart insight into the Sunday Mass readings that you may enter more deeply into the liturgy and apply God’s word to your life.
• Local News stories keep you informed about what’s happening in our Catholic community.
• World/Nation stories supply news about what’s happening in the global Church.
• Special Section stories give you the Catholic perspective on topics related to seniors, marriage, families, youth, education, finances, vocations and other subjects.
We serve the Gospel by sharing the good news of God’s people today, by making Church teaching relevant for your life and by inspiring you to achieve your call to holiness. We are proud of the Denver Catholic Register’s 110 years of service to the Gospel and that at a time of uncertainty in the newspaper business God has permitted us to continue our work of evangelization.
In closing, we thought we’d share a letter from a reader telling what the Denver Catholic Register means to her:
As far as I can recall, and I am 96 ½ years old, a Catholic paper has been in my household (excepting the war years). Originally, it was the Brooklyn Tablet that guided and informed. For the past 63 years, it has been the Denver Catholic Register! How else would we be informed of the “doings” in our and other dioceses? I look forward to reading it each week. What do you suppose is the first item I read? The CateQuiz’em by Dominic Camplisson! It makes a person do a bit of deep thinking … and what you don’t know, you learn. Thank you for that part of the Register!
George Weigel gives me things to consider; things on which to reflect. I always search the ads and have used a few for things, or work, that I needed. The Archbishop’s Column is read—need I go on?—for guidance.
I survive on a World War II widow’s allowance and Social Security and annuity interest. My small budget is my boss, so I haven’t much to share, but here’s a grateful (donation). I hope others can give more.
I’ll pray for your survival. Thank you, and blessings for all your good work. —Cecilia Droll, Golden
Thank you, Cecilia. We’re grateful to you and to all our readers and advertisers for your loyalty and support. We’re looking forward to seeing some of you at our anniversary open house and we’ll remember all of you at a special Mass of thanksgiving. And then we’ll be right back to work on the next issue of the Denver Catholic Register.
