Catholic Press Month: Meet the Denver Catholic Register staffers
February is Catholic Press Month. Next month, the Denver Catholic Register will mark its 110th birthday on March 17, St. Patrick’s Day. This column begins a series leading up to that milestone.
In this first column we thought it would be fun to let our readers “Meet the Staffers” through brief profiles. You’ll find those below. Next week, we’ll introduce you to our general manager, Web and advertising staffers. We are planning an open house next month where you can meet the staffers in person. Read upcoming columns for more details.
With this issue of the Register we are also kicking off the 2010 Join the Mission voluntary subscription campaign. Read more about the campaign in the ad on Page 12 or online at www.archden.org/join. Last year, our readers expressed their support for the Register with $10,000 in voluntary subscriptions!
The week of our anniversary, we will celebrate a Mass for our readers’ and advertisers’ intentions. We invite you to send us your intentions and we also invite you to let us know how the Register touches your life. Contact us at: editor@archden.org or DCR Editor, 1300 S. Steele St., Denver, CO 80210 or 303-715-3215.
Finally, know that all of us at the Register appreciate your faithful support and we wish you a blessed Lenten season. We hope your weekly Register helps make it a meaningful one.

Describe your job:
As editor I’m responsible for planning and executing the Denver Catholic Register. My duties include making the editorial and photo assignments, writing, editing copy and overseeing layout. I’ve served as editor for nine years, prior to that I was the reporter.
What do you like about working for the DCR?
I love that at the Register we share the good news of God’s people today. Not only do I work with talented, dedicated people who are trying to be holy, but we get to meet remarkable people and share their stories as we strive to inform, inspire, evangelize and catechize our readers.
What motivates you in your work?
Gratitude to God for entrusting me with this great privilege. My prayer each day is that through our work we at the Register may be sanctified; that our work may be a blessing to our readers, subjects and all those who come into contact with it; and that it may bring God greater glory and honor.
Aside from your job, what are you passionate about?
My wonderful hubby, Chuck, and our two sons and their families, especially our three grandchildren. I am also passionate about prayer, spiritual books, pilgrimages and cross stitch.

What do you like about working for the DCR?
The JPII Center is a beautiful place: the architecture, the artwork, the people. There aren’t too many workplaces where you can bump into a deacon in the hall who will stop to bless your throat on the feast of St. Blaise. Another perk: no one thinks you’re crazy if you pray when you have writer’s block or a tight deadline or…
What motivates you in your work?
Since becoming a mom I’ve tried to take better care of my spiritual health—discovering and re-discovering the blessings of the Catholic Church. I’ve been fortunate to combine my love for the Church and journalism working for the Register. It gives me the chance to learn and grow every day—and to serve in my own small way by writing a story every now and then that speaks to someone’s heart.
Aside from your job, what are you passionate about?
My husband, 6-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter. At this point in my life, my passions are whatever they’re passionate about that day (Legos, Little People, Cub Scouts, baby dolls). I also enjoy blogging (juliefilby.wordpress.com) about our little sources of inspiration (a.k.a. the kids) and the endearing things they say and do.

What I like about working for the Denver Catholic Register is that by doing what I know and enjoy doing, I’m able to help the Catholic Church.
What motivates you in your work?
What motivates me is the work environment—everybody is really nice and committed to their jobs.
Aside from your job, what are you passionate about?
I’m passionate about sports. I’m from Perú, so the sport that I like the most is soccer, but since arriving to the United States, I also enjoy watching football, basketball and baseball. Of course, I’m a Broncos, Nuggets and Rockies fan.
