The Saints: St. John Marie Vianney 18th - 19th centuries / Feast – Aug. 4 John Marie Vianney was born in Dardilly, near Lyons, France. Called the Cure d’Ars (priest of Ars), he became known for his priestly and pastoral work, which transformed his village. He became renowned as a confessor and director of souls. Ordained at 30, his struggles with Latin nearly prevented his becoming a priest. He led an austere life of extreme mortification and was besieged by the devil. Much beloved by his parishioners his life was filled with works of charity and love. The patron of parish priests, Pope Benedict XVI has announced his intention to declare him the patron of all priests during the Year for Priests. |
