The title Doctor of the Church, recognizing an eminent teacher of faith, has been bestowed on this 4th-century bishop of Jerusalem. He was exiled three times from the Holy City because of disputes with pro-Arian authorities. But he is remembered most for his profound catechesis given to catechumens preparing for Baptism at the Easter Vigil. In homilies titled “Catechetical Lectures” he told the catechumens, “God has called you, and you have your calling.”
