Beyond clothing I agree with Jake Bajeani’s point (“Clerical and religious dress” Letter to the Editor, Jan. 21 Denver Catholic Register) concerning how God can work through clothing, but would that the glory of Christ could be made more manifest by merely donning a costume! When Friedrich Nietzsche denigrated Christianity and smugly proclaimed God’s “death,” this was not predicated upon the attire of Christians, but upon the lack of Christ’s apparent presence in Christians. We weren’t there with Nietzsche, so who knows if he really didn’t see Christ or chose not to. In any case, in my experience, what makes Christianity convincing is the affect Christ has on the lives of Christians. Sometimes they scandalize me by their behavior; at other times I’m greatly edified by them. In the end, I can look at them and say, “Wow, Christ has changed you—for the better.” Matt McGuiness |
