Feb. 1 is National Day of Prayer for the African American Family
The National Day of Prayer for the African American Family was founded by Father James E. Goode, O.F.M., in 1989. Supporters of this prayer day are inviting people of African descent and all the family of God, to gather in prayer to kick off Black History Month, which is observed in February. The faithful are encouraged to gather and pray on Feb. 1 to give special thanks to God for African American families.
A brochure commemorating the 20th anniversary of the National Day of Prayer for the African American Family is now available through the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. This resource aims to help individuals and families observe the day and includes prayer, ideas to celebrate the day and a catechetical reflection. To order the brochure and for more information, visit the U.S. bishops’ Web site at usccb.org/saac/nationaldayofprayer.shtml.
