Loretto Sister Jane Wilcox dies in 63rd year of religious life

Sister of Loretto Jane Wilcox died Nov. 1, the feast of All Saints, at Flaget Hospital in Bardstown, Ky. She was in the 63rd year of her religious life.

Born in St. Louis in 1921, Jane Wilcox grew up in Sacred Heart Parish, where she attended elementary school. She continued her education at Loretto Academy and St. Alphonsus High School, graduating in 1939. In April 1940, she entered the Sisters of Loretto, taking the name Sister John Joseph. She later resumed using her baptismal name, Jane.

Sister Wilcox taught at Holy Family School in Denver for 10 years. During this time she completed studies for her A.B. in English at Loretto Heights College (1942-52). From there, she taught or was administrator at schools in New Madrid, Mo. (1952); East St. Louis, Ill. (1953-55); Montgomery, Ala. (1955); Springfield (1957-64) and Kansas City, Mo. (1964-66); and Houston (1966-81).

After 40 years in education, Sister Wilcox became a student again and studied gerontology at Webster University in St. Louis. She practiced in six nursing homes in the St. Louis area (1981-83). She was appointed social services coordinator and assistant to the administrator at the Loretto Motherhouse Infirmary in Nerinx, Ky. (1983-95). She retired at the motherhouse in 1995.

Sister Wilcox is survived by her sister, Sister Rosemary Wilcox, S.L., of Denver; by her brothers, S. Thomas Wilcox of Maryknoll, N.Y., and William J. Wilcox of St. Louis; and by her sister-in-law, Jackie Wilcox of St. Louis.
