Early registration advised for class in traditional iconography
Intensive one-week course scheduled at John Paul II Center in February
An intensive class in iconography is scheduled at St. John Vianney Theological Seminary the week of Feb. 3-8.
The art, traditional in the Russian Orthodox Church, will be taught by Dmitiri Andreyev. He and his family constitute the faculty of the Prosopon School of Iconology.
Andreyev, a native of the former Soviet Union, teaches icon writing as a spiritual expression as well as an artistic skill. The class covers six full days, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Saturday with a one-hour lunch break available at the site, the seminary refectory at 1300 S. Steele St.
Formal class time totals 36 hours, and extra time in the studio is available from 8:30 a.m. before class until 10 p.m. afterward.
"Most students find that extra time spent in the studio is helpful," Coordinator Madeleine Dodge of the archdiocese's Office of Liturgy said.
Class size is limited to 20, although it might be expanded if another instructor is available, she said.
Andreyev, his father, a half-brother and two other instructors conduct the school throughout the United States and Canada. He told the Register last year lessons are based on traditional writing in the Russian Orthodox Church.
Instruction includes lessons in the symbolism and spiritual practice associated with the art, he said.
Tuition is $475, with $100 due at registration. Dodge advised early registration because of the limited class size. Registration is due Dec. 1 and can be mailed to Madeleine Dodge, Office of Liturgy, Archdiocese of Denver, 1300 S. Steele St., Denver 80210.
