Denver CCW director takes place on national council
Longmont mother of 11 installed at Miami convention
Alice Anne Pilkington of St. John the Baptist Parish in Longmont will represent the Province of Denver on the National Council of Catholic Women for the next two years.
The Province of Denver is made up of the councils of the Archdiocese of Denver; Dioceses of Cheyenne, Wyo; Colorado Springs and Pueblo, Colo; and Phoenix. The office of province director is rotated among the five dioceses and appointed by the respective bishops.
Pilkington was installed at the National Council of Catholic Women General Assembly in Miami last month and will serve through September 2004.
She has served as president for all levels of the Council of Catholic Women-Denver, and while living in North Carolina, she organized and directed the formation of the Charlotte Diocesan Council of Catholic Women.
Pilkington and her husband Will have 11 children. They have been active in numerous church and community programs and since 1988 have facilitated prayer groups for Centering Prayer and engaged in video classes on the Spiritual Journey for Contemplative Outreach.
The National Council of Catholic Women was founded in 1920 by Catholic bishops of the United States as part of the Department of Lay Organizations of the National Catholic Welfare Conference.
The Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women-Denver, was established in 1925 under Bishop J. Henry Tihen to assist with many needs, such as providing religious instruction to children of migrant workers, establishing a health-care clinic at St. Catejan Church and organizing English classes for the broader immigrant population. These and other varied activities were incorporated into Diocesan Charities, later known as Catholic Charities, to support Colorado's indigent.
Each level of the National Council of Catholic Women determines the programs that are important and do-able for the specific group. The council is structured to enable all women to become an integral part of the local, diocesan and national councils.
