Sisters of Loretto celebrate anniversaries

A festive Mass honored Loretto jubilarians at Loretto Motherhouse in Nerinx, Ky., earlier this year. Six of this year's Loretto jubilarians live in Denver and one lives in Salida.

On April 25, Loretto celebrated its founding 190 years ago in 1812.

Of the 25 Loretto jubilarians for 2002, there are three sisters celebrating 75 years; 16 sisters celebrating 50 years this year; and six Loretto co-members celebrating 25 years.

Besides the Loretto jubilarians living in Colorado, others live in Missouri, Kentucky, Louisiana, Texas, California, Illinois, and Calgary, Alberta, Canada and Ghana, West Africa. Over the years their work has brought them to many other places as well.

In Colorado Sisters Dorothy Mary Bauer, Mary Ann Coyle, Mary Ann Cunningham, Kathleen O'Malley and Eva Marie Salas celebrate 50 years in Loretto this year. Celebrating 25 years as Loretto co-members are Bernice Strawn and Harriet "Tip" Altmix.

The jubilarians have been involved in many areas of service. Sister Dorothy Mary taught art at St. Mary's Academy from 1960 to 1990. Sister Mary Ann Coyle taught at Loretto Heights College and served as president of St. Mary's Academy from 1977-1986. She then served a six-year term as president of the Sisters of Loretto. Sister Mary Ann Cunningham taught at several Denver schools between the late 1960s and 1970s, including Loretto Heights College, Central Catholic High School and Mullen High School. Sister Kathleen O'Malley's most recent work was a supervisor of Emergency Services for Catholic Charities and she continues at Catholic Charities on a part-time basis.
