Marycrest Franciscans celebrate jubilee anniversaries

Nuns celebrate 50, 60 and 65 years of religious life

The Sisters of St. Francis at Marycrest are celebrating jubilee anniversaries for eight sisters this year. Those who ministered recently in Denver are Sisters Helena Hager (65 years), Helen Cassino (60 years) and Maureen Murphy (50 years).

Sister Helena Hager

Born in Minot, N.D., Sister Hager spent many years serving as a nurse there and in Nebraska and Colorado. She worked for many years at St. Joseph and Mercy Hospitals in Denver. She did a lot of work in pediatrics and worked with polio patients during the epidemic. Her favorite hobby is art, but she is now dealing with macular degeneration and can no longer paint or draw. One of Sister Hager's favorite inspirational verses is by Gen. Douglas MacArthur: "Nobody grows old merely by living a number of years. People grow old only by deserting their ideals."

Sister Helen Cassino

Born and raised in New York City, Sister Cassino served much of her time teaching on the East Coast and continued in Colorado at Marycrest High School until her retirement in the mid-1980s. Sister Cassino often volunteers at Serenity Residence, part of Marycrest Assisted Living. She also spends her time, patiently, with her adorable new puppy, Peek-a-boo.

Sister Maureen Murphy

Sister Murphy taught elementary school for 25 years. More recently, she served as a personal care provider for many years in Denver, caring for elderly in their own homes. Sister Murphy was born in Stuart, Neb. The beginning of one of her favorite morning prayers is: "You are one thing, God, just one very small thing. I shall never burden my today with cares about my tomorrow, even though it takes practice."

Other sisters celebrating jubilee anniversaries this year are Sisters Agnes Gunther (70 years), Margaret Mary Schneider (65 years), Jeanne Flahaven (50 years), Agnesmarie Slaight (50 years) and Jeannine Hershiser (25 years). Donations are being accepted to the sisters Retirement Fund in honor of all or one of these sisters at the Marycrest Development Office, 2851 W. 52nd Ave., Denver, CO 80221.
