156 attend summer camp for developmentally disabled
Students and volunteers attend 23rd annual Overnighter summer camp
Some 156 developmentally disabled students and volunteer counselors attended Overnighter 2002, a weekend camp sponsored by the Special Religious Education program of the Archdiocese of Denver at Camp Santa Maria near Bailey the weekends of May 18-19 and 25-26.
The campers were treated to paddle-boating, canoeing, hiking and even a dance during the 23rd annual summer camp experience.
"We have a lot of outdoor sports baseball, races, swings and kickball as well as indoor table games, and lots of arts and crafts," said Sister Mary Catherine Widger, S.L., associate director of the Special Religious Education program. "It's a great opportunity to get outside the classroom and let the teachers and students experience each other outside the classroom."
A Sunday liturgy, celebrated by program director Father Roland Freeman, was followed by a barbecue, she added.
An estimated 250 students participate in the Special Religious Education program, which culminates with the summer camp. Students from numerous parishes attend classes during the school year at a dozen parishes that host the program.
Camp cost is $30 per student. The Knights of Columbus and individuals donate to help cover the actual camp cost of $35 per student, Sister Widger said.
"What amazes me most is watching the generosity of the counselors with the students," she said. "And the Camp Santa Maria staff goes far beyond the call of duty. They are wonderful and always have been."
