Over 100 attend DCCW 76th annual convention at St. Malo
Women's organization elects new officers, hears inspiring speakers
Over 100 women of the Archdiocese of Denver Council of Catholic Women met June 2-3 to celebrate their 76th annual convention. The conference was held at St. Malo Retreat and Conference Center in Allenspark.
The Longmont Area council under the leadership of Mary Jane Begalle, Gerri Miller and Gene Schelly hosted the event. Special guests were the presidents of the Wyoming and the Colorado Springs councils.
This year's theme, "Prayer and Work in the Modern World," was discussed by many inspiring speakers including Father James E. Kleiner, DCCW spiritual director; Sister Agnes Ann Gardt, S.C., Church commission chair; Roxanne King, editor of the Denver Catholic Register; Esther Velasquez, province director; and Marge Meis-White of St. Joan of Arc Parish.
Officers unanimously chosen for the coming year are: president, Alberta Lopez; 1st vice president, Beverly Blanchard; 2nd vice president, Dorothy Lechman; secretary, Florence Liittjohann; treasurer, Bernadel Fisher; and historian, Mary Rausch.
A standing ovation and gift was given to Mary Schaefer, outgoing president.
Avis Willeke, chair of the annual scholarship award, presented $500 to Diana Garcia, a teacher, who will use it to further her studies at Regis University.
Schelly, president of the Sterling Area, was toast mistress for the Sunday night banquet and entertainment. She also invited all to the 2003 convention. Date to be announced.
A memorial service was held for deceased members.
