Regis Jesuit High on track to open girls division next year

Girls division inaugural year to operate off-campus while new facility built

Encouraged by the high level of giving to date, the Regis Board of Trustees recommitted itself at its April meeting to opening a girls division fall 2003.

The girls division will operate at an off-campus site for the inaugural year while a new boys facility is constructed at the current campus, organizers said. Once completed, the girls would move into the present facility at Arapahoe and Parker roads in Aurora, organizers said. The boys and girls divisions will be separated by an athletic field.

The Tradition Touching Tomorrow capital campaign has raised more than $10.6 million in 10 months despite a weak economy, organizers said. In addition, due to lower cost estimates, the capital campaign goal has been reduced by at least $2 million to approximately $18 million.

"We're thrilled to announce that our campaign has surpassed the $10 million mark and recognize that through the efforts of a number of generous donors we have accomplished a great deal in a short time — thanks to all those who have demonstrated their leadership by supporting the expansion of Catholic and Jesuit education in Denver," said Father Wally Sidney, S.J., Regis president.

Originally targeting a May 2002 finish to the fund-raising campaign, organizers said that has been extended to the end of 2002.

"A final fund-raising push is underway and the school is redoubling its efforts to complete the capital campaign by year-end," Father Sidney said. "It will take many more gifts of all sizes for the campaign to reach its goal. We hope that the community will continue to recognize the value of what we are creating here and decide to give generously."

If the fund-raising goals are met, organizers said, Regis will break ground on its new facilities March 2003 and will open the expanded campus in August 2004. The new timetable represents a year delay from the original plan, which Father Sidney described at the time as "extremely aggressive."

The school intends to open the off-site girls division for 300 students next year provided fund-raising results are encouraging as of August 2002, organizers said. Regis is actively researching an off-campus location for the girls division.

Established in 1877, Regis is operated by the Jesuit order. More than 800 boys from all over the Denver area currently attend the school.
