Catholic Schools associate superintendent honored
Susan Murphy one of seven awarded NCA's 2002 Vaughn award
Susan M. Murphy, associate superintendent for Archdiocese of Denver Schools, is one of seven educators in the North Central Association region to receive the Excellence in Education award for 2002.
Each year the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement invites teachers, administrators, students, parents and community representatives to nominate individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership in education, have strong character, generate high expectations for student achievement and serve as an advocate for students. The commission then selects four to seven people from across the 19-state region to receive the award.
The award honors the memory of John W. Vaughn, who was executive director of the commission prior to his death in 1986. Formal announcement of the award recipients was made April 7 at the association's annual meeting in Chicago.
Selection criteria for the John Vaughn Award include the following:
Motivating students to higher levels of achievement;
Involving a community in the substantive aspects of schooling;
Generating a common mission and higher expectations among students, faculty and community members;
Expanding programs and services to meet the varying needs of students;
Demonstrating a pioneering spirit that enables a school to move forward regardless of the political or economic climate.
The North Central Association of Colleges and Schools serves educational institutions in 19 states, the Navajo Nation, and Overseas Dependent Schools through the provision of accreditation and school improvement activities. More than 9,600 schools, colleges and universities are members of the association.
