Abbey of St. Walburga offers afternoon retreats

The Benedictine nuns of the Abbey of St. Walburga in Virginia Dale offer Saturday afternoon prayer and reflection gatherings. Abbey Afternoon events are held in the Walburga Chapel beneath the main abbey church. Each program runs from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Suggested donation is $15 per person, per program. Advance registration is requested.

May 25: "We Believe in the Holy Spirit, the Giver of Life"

Sister Ancilla Armijo, O.S.B.

The Holy Spirit was Jesus' parting gift to us as teacher and guide on our journey. We will look at the Spirit's role as sanctifier and giver of life, especially through his gifts and fruits.

June 8: "In the School of Prayer III: The Prayer of Jesus"

Abbess Maria-Thomas Beil, O.S.B.

The purpose of the series "In the School of Prayer" is to become acquainted with the ways in which people related to God in different periods of history, to learn how their prayer reflected their faith in God, and how we can derive nourishment for our own spiritual life. Each session is independent: one can attend one session without attending any of the others.

June 15: Mechtild of Magdeburg's "The Flowing Life of the Godhead"

Sister Ancilla Armijo, O.S.B.

In the course of this one afternoon we will only be able to get an initial glimpse of the medieval mystic Mechtild of Magdeburg, centering especially on her consciousness of God as expressed in her mystical writings. It is hoped that this introduction might inspire participants to continue to study her works and their value for one's own journey.

The Abbey of St. Walburga is located about 35 miles north of Fort Collins, 29 miles south of Laramie, on U.S. Highway 287. The entrance road is on the west side of the highway at mile marker 381, about four miles south of the Wyoming state line.
