Archbishop to bless computer lab serving Cole neighborhood
A new computer lab at Humbolt apartments, a family site run by Archdiocesan Housing, is bringing technology to the Cole neighborhood in Denver. The Sister Mary Lucy Neighborhood Network Center will be blessed by Archbishop Charles Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., April 25 at 4:30 p.m.
Festivities will include the release of 50 white doves, a choir, Aztec dancing, and a talk about Sister Mary Lucy Downey, the first executive director of Archdiocesan Housing, said Steve Reemts, administrator of St. Martin Plaza and Humbolt Apartments.
The lab has already been open three months and is available to residents as well as to the community. Eight computers provide Internet and e-mail access as well as access to education, Reemts said. Residents interested in learning new skills, whether in computer or other subjects, can take on-line classes through Smart Force, which offers numerous certification programs, Reemts added. Registration for the course is $25/person and includes unlimited courses and a free used computer for the student's home upon completion of the program. Use of the lab is free.
Computer Lab Director, Margarita Padilla, offers various computer courses in Spanish and English, Reemts said. Monday through Thursday tutoring is offered from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. and the lab is open only for educational purposes. Intergeneration programs and trainings will also be offered for senior residents, he said.
The lab is located at 3707-A Humboldt St., Denver, CO 80205. The lab is open 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. Monday and Wednesday, and 2 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. Saturday it is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Homework hour is 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The blessing ceremony will run from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. April 25.
